Eid Al-Fitr Prayers

People prayed at Kabul’s Shah-e Do Shamshira Mosque on July 28 as they celebrated Eid al-Fitr, the holiday that marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. The place of worship, whose name translates as Mosque of the King of Two Swords, is located in the center of the Afghan capital, next to the tomb of an Arab commander who died in the 7th century when the Arabs entered Kabul. I am a Beggar in the World
A New Book of Poetry

After learning the story of a teenage girl who was forbidden to write poems and set herself on fire in protest, the poet Eliza Griswold and the photographer Seamus Murphy journeyed to Afghanistan to learn about these women and to collect their landays. The poems gathered in I Am the Beggar of the World express a collective rage, a lament, a filthy joke, a love of homeland, an aching longing, a call to arms, all of which belie any facile image of a Pashtun woman as nothing but a mute ghost beneath a blue burqa.  More>>>

  Afghanistan Make 2-2 Draw

Afghanistan came made a roaring comeback in the 4-match one-day international series against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, after the hosts had taken a 2-0 lead in the series, as they beat the hosts by 100 runs in the 4th and final ODI to level the series 2-2. Afghanistan scraped through to a win by two wickets in the 3rd ODI and had to win the 4th ODI to draw the series, showing they are on equal footing with Zimbabwe, who are one of the ten ICC Full Members.   Pomegranate Boom
in Kandahar

Pomegranates have always been an important crop in Afghanistan, and production has revived over the last decade. In Kandahar province, once the epicentre of Taleban power and still a trouble-spot, farmers say pomegranates offer a viable alternate to opium poppies. Provincial agriculture official Sher Mohammad told IWPR that the area covered by pomegranate orchards was on the increase, and that 300 new plantations had appeared in one district, Arghandab, alone. More>>>

  Afghanistan risks losing
health gains

LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) – Afghanistan risks losing even the basic health gains it has made over the past decade if it becomes a “forgotten crisis” when international troops leave the country at the end of the year, Benoit De Gryse, Medecins Sans Frontieres’ chief in Afghanistan said. “A lot of improvements have been made, but they are very precarious,” De Gryse said, “I think that donors have to be aware that this is possible … The country cannot sustain itself.” More>>>
