Ancient Buddha statues smashed by Taliban restored by Kabul Museum

Archaelogists and restoration experts have reassembled and restored several statues, including the magnificiant and ancient Buddha statues, smashed by the Taliban during their rule. The painstakingly reassembled objects include the cross-legged, 2nd or 3rd century A.D. Bodhisatva Sidhartha, which has now been restablished at a place of pride at the top of the Kabul Museum’s staircase. The larger than life-size beautiful statue had been reduced to shards by Taliban fanatics. People like veteran restorer at the museum, Abdullah Hakimzada, who has spent the past 33 years working at the museum, are proud to have collected pieces of the smashed statues. More>>>

This is an interview with Dr Humaira Qaderi, an Afghan writer and women’s rights activist. She was a teenager during the years of the Taliban, when girls were forbidden from going to school and libraries were closed. Qaderi read whatever she could find and attended underground women’s writing classes, at great risk to her family and herself. Afghanistan orders mass vaccinations after polio case

Afghanistan has reported its first case of polio since 2001 after doctors diagnosed a 3-year-old with the illness. It is believed the sick child contracted the disease through her father, a taxi driver who often drives to Pakistan where polio is endemic as polio strain in the two countries is identical.  The Afghan health ministry immediately ordered a mass ordered a vaccination campaign across the capital.More>>>  and More>>>

  UNHCR welcomes Afghanistan’s new IDP policy

UNHCR this week welcomed a new national policy in Afghanistan on the rights of the internally displaced people (IDP). Launched in Kabul, Afghanistan’s new IDP policy seeks to ensure the protection of rights of the displaced, aims to find solutions for people affected by conflict and natural disasters and sets out the roles and responsibilities of the different government ministries, humanitarian and other partners. More>>>

  UNAMA Report on Protection of Civilians in Afghanistan for 2013

On Saturday 8th February 2014, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) published its annual report on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict in Afghanistan for 2013 covering the period 1 January to 31 December 2013. The Quiz” has been operating since 2006. Originally it was held in the Springfield Sports Bar / Restaurant, Wazir Akbar Khan.  It was held in the garden as much as possible despite the noise from generators.   Afghanistan Under-19s depart for ICC Under-19 World Cup in Dubai

The Afghanistan Under-19 cricket team left for Dubai this week to participate in ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.  Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) officials said Saturday that ICC Under-19 cricket world cup is due to start from 14 February and will continue until early March. The Afghanistan Cricket Board chairman, Shahzada Masoud told reporters that the Afghan Under-19 cricket team will face Australia, Bangladesh and Namibia in ICC Under-19 world cup in Dubai.  More>>>

Afghanistan can cause an upset in Group B of ICC U19 CWC

Australia is targeting to win its fourth title though its previous three victories have come in more familiar territories (Australia in 1998 and New Zealand in 2002 and 2010). Afghanistan will be the dark horse in Group B of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2014 starting on 14 February. The group also includes Australia, Bangladesh and Namibia. Bangladesh reached the quarter-finals in 2012 in Australia and won the Plate Championship in 1998 and 2004, but Afghanistan is a side that is capable of causing an upset. More>>>

  Afghan football officials to visit Wembley

A party from Afghanistan is to pay a knowledge-sharing visit to England, as part of a programme to foster the development of football in the war-torn country and aid the nation-building process that the west is keen to see take root.   The expedition, expected later this year, will include visits to Wembley, St George’s Park, the Football Association’s national football centre at Burton upon Trent, and other facilities, as well as meetings and workshops with FA and Premier League executives. Two sponsored places for Afghan coaches on the FA international licence course at St George’s Park from September have also been set aside.  More>>>

Dog POW demands the best food, bed

Captured NATO army dog “Colonel” is putting the bite on his Taliban captors in Afghanistan for people food and blankets. The NATO military dog captured by the Taliban in a fierce fire fight won’t eat the gruel that local Afghan mutts wolf down. So his captors have had to cook up a human diet of chicken and beef kebabs for the reddish-brown Belgian Malinois, the terror group said Friday.   Chinese, Afghan Presidents Agree to Promote Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai, agreed Friday to further advance the relations between their countries. The two leaders are in this Russian resort city for the opening ceremony of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games. China, Xi said, attaches great importance to its relations with Afghanistan, and stands ready to maintain high-level exchanges and promote communication and cooperation between them, so as to push forward the development of bilateral ties.  More>>>

  Japan To Aid $43m For Kabul Airport Security

In a bid to improve the security system of Kabul International Airport, the government of Japan donated about $43 million dollars to the Afghan government. At the signing ceremony of the agreement with Japanese Ambassador to Kabul Hiroshi Takashi, the Afghan foreign minister Zarar Ahmad Moqbil Osmani said the project was aimed at strengthening the security system, installing modern security facilities, scanning machines, X-Ray and metal detectors. He added construction of an international passenger building and provision of transportation busses were also included in the project.More>>>
