  Afghanistan Back from Brink
Election Audit Begins Today

The euphoria over a U.S.-brokered deal between Afghanistan’s rival presidential candidates at the weekend was a sign of how close some people believe the country came to a split along ethnic lines that could quickly turn violent. “While we all took a collective sigh of relief on Saturday night, the hard work is still before us, both on the technical process given all the logistical challenges … as well as the other part of this … which is the political process,” said a senior official. More>>>

  Civilian Casualties Rise by 24%

Ground combat among parties to the armed conflict in Afghanistan surpassed improvised explosive devices (IEDs) as the leading cause of conflict-related death and injury to Afghan civilians in the first six months of 2014, according to a major report of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), launched today in the Afghan capital of Kabul.UNAMA also noted that ground engagements and crossfire hit children and women with unprecedented force, with associated child casualties more than doubling in the first six months of 2014 and two-thirds more women killed and injured by ground engagements compared with 2013.More>>> and See the Report>>>

  Artists Paint Hopeful Picture
in Kandahar

Amateur art collector, Mohammad Idris, emerged from a gallery delighted with his latest purchase. He told IWPR, “I’ve loved paintings since childhood. I liked this picture, and although it was difficult to agree on price with the shopkeeper, I finally bought it from him. There is a long tradition of visual art in Afghanistan, but more than three decades of conflict have affected traditional disciplines like painting and calligraphy. More>>>

  A Break (dance)
from the Elections

“It’s not raqs” said Nasir, captain of a mostly boys’ breakdance crew in Kabul, Afghanistan, as he raises his arms and wiggles his shoulders in a caricature of the rhythmic, upper-body dominated dance characteristic of Afghan weddings. “It’s dance.” “What they call ‘raqs,’ that’s not what we do,” he says. Street dance (not raqs!) is born and reborn out of a search for unique, often socially unconventional, ways to express oneself. For street dancers, there is always another way to manipulate the body. More>>>

  Renewable energy
for Afghanistan

Villages in northern Afghanistan that until recently were completely in the dark now have electricity, thanks to small-scale hydropower plants and solar installations. GIZ reports: “In April we handed over two new hydropower plants to the local inhabitants.” Both of these supply energy to private households, private companies and public institutions in 29 villages, where 30,000 people benefit from the regulated supply of electricity. More>>>

  Undoing Afghanistan’s
resource curse

A little-known bill just passed the upper house of the Afghan Parliament that could help counter threats to the country’s stability and future development, but only if the U.S. government works with Afghanistan to ensure that it is fixed before it becomes law. The mining law matters. What the proposed law, which would replace an existing one, is supposed to do is set out how contracts for the vast mineral riches are granted, who is eligible to get them, what taxes they will pay and what protections there are for the environment and local communities. More>>>

  316 industrial establishments
for New Kabul

Officials of the Green Factories Association said they have plans to construct 316 industrial establishments in the Green Kabul zone, which is located in New Kabul Town. Afghanistan has a consumer centric economy, and Afghan traders end up paying a lot as taxation to neighbouring countries annually. Setting up of the planned industries would create about 30,000 new job opportunities and also boost the economy of the country. More>>>

  Afghans Complain
of Substandard Medicines

Out-of-date or counterfeit medicines, often administered by under-trained doctors, are a serious risk to public health across Afghanistan. The problem is especially acute in provinces like Khost, where a common border with Pakistan provides rich opportunities for smuggling, including substandard pharmaceuticals.  More>>>

US Aid Shrinking

WASHINGTON — Civilian assistance to Afghanistan was always slated to shrink with America’s military footprint, but U.S. aid officials were caught off-guard when Congress, upset by testy relations with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, slashed civilian aid by 50 percent this year. Officials with the U.S. Agency for International Development warn that reducing aid too quickly is risky. They argue that if aid to Afghanistan drops quickly, it will jeopardize gains in education, health care and other civilian programs.  More>>>

Butchers Pose
Public Health Hazard

Residents of the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad complain that local butchers are creating a public health hazard by slaughtering animals in public places and failing to observe basic hygiene standards. Although Jalalabad, the main city in Nangarhar province, has an abattoir, very few of the 350 butchers in the city use it, preferring to kill livestock on their own premises or in public places – in the street, by canals or near the river Behsud.  More>>>
